She completed a 3 year residency in Comparative Ophthalmology from the University of Missouri and became board-certified in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) in 1989. Dr. McCalla’s clinical interests are many and include: complementary alternative medicine and the role of antioxidants in the treatment of ocular disease in animals; retinal disease; the role of stress in animal wellness; and feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) ocular disease. She co-invented the veterinary vision supplement, Ocu-GLO®, and is co-founder of Animal HealthQuest Solutions LLC, a veterinary nutraceutical research and development company.
The eyes of dogs and cats are beautiful and wonderfully complex, but easily damaged in many ways that can be reduced in severity and sometimes even prevented if “caught” early in the disease process, or before ocular tissues even begin to be injured. Dr. McCalla is passionate about reducing the risk of damage to the eyes of animal at high risk for ocular disease, by educating owners to help them make the best pet healthcare decisions and by helping veterinarians expand their knowledge about veterinary ophthalmology.
Dr. McCalla lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her husband and three cats. Their son has autism, which has transformed his parents into advocates for all beings in our Animal Kingdom without a voice. All pets and their owners deserve to live their best lives together.
Karen E. Mueller DVM, AVCA Certified
Dr. Mueller received her BS in Biology and BA in Education, with honors, at Western Washington University in 1986, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 1990. Before becoming a veterinarian, she showed horses in 3-day eventing, and dogs in conformation and obedience, and worked in dog grooming and boarding.
Dr. Mueller brings a broad wealth of experience to Pet Health Harbour, LLC. With over 30 years of experience, she has a strong background in general small animal practice, including feline-only practice, as well as experience in emergency medicine, relief practice, and shelter medicine. Dr. Mueller was certified in Animal Chiropractic in 1995 by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association and since 1998 has maintained a solo animal chiropractic practice, Mueller Animal Chiropractic, in Bellingham, WA.
Dr. Mueller has two primary passions in veterinary medicine. The first is to improve the quality of life of pets, largely through reducing and preventing pain. She has addressed this by providing education for pet owners and accessible veterinary services, including chiropractic. Her other passion is preventing the single most common cause of death in companion animals: euthanasia due to overpopulation. She has worked tirelessly in high-quality, high-volume, low-cost spay and neuter programs to address and prevent this problem.
Dr. Karen Mueller was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and still lives there with her husband and their three dogs. She continues to work in Spay and Neuter programs throughout the region, as well as practice at Mueller Animal Chiropractic.

In 2019, she returned to Australia where she worked full-time in both medical and surgical ophthalmology as well as resident training at Animal Eye Care in Melbourne Australia.
In 2023, Dr. Ford returned to Vancouver to provide locum services to ophthalmologists.
Clinically, Dr. Ford has been interested in corneal repair, the development of ocular prosthetics, and the effect of changing light frequency on vision.
Dr. Ford is passionate about teaching and thrives on the development of inventive and effective teaching strategies. “The excitement felt when I see the ‘light bulb’ moment of understanding in the eyes of a client or student will never feel routine.
With understanding comes a feeling of empowerment in the active management of the pet or patient condition” says Ford. This excitement is one of the driving forces behind Dr. Ford’s desire to be a part of Pet Health Harbour.
