Every year on August 8, the internet pawses for a moment to honor our whiskered companions, and International Cat Day 2025 is no different. Sure, most cats couldn’t care less about a human-made holiday (unless it comes with treats), but that hasn’t stopped us from celebrating them in every way possible, including through the magic of film.

From animated royalty to scene-stealing sidekicks, cats have prowled their way into some of cinema’s most memorable moments. In honor of today’s festivities, we’re rolling out the red carpet for the feline stars who’ve purred, leapt, and clawed their way into our hearts.

Simba, Mufasa, Nala, and Scar – The Lion King

You can’t talk about iconic movie cats without starting at Pride Rock. These big cats might be animated, but their legacy is as real as it gets. Simba’s journey from wide-eyed cub to rightful king, Mufasa’s booming wisdom, Nala’s fierce loyalty, and Scar’s deliciously villainous sneer, they’ve all become part of our collective movie memory.

On International Cat Day 2025, it’s worth noting that The Lion King isn’t just about lions; it’s about identity, responsibility, and the circle of life. But let’s be honest, it’s also about one of the best soundtracks ever.

Puss in Boots – Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Some cats just know how to make an entrance, and Puss does it in knee-high leather boots. Over the years, the swashbuckling feline has become one of DreamWorks’ most beloved characters, blending swordplay with a killer smirk.

In The Last Wish, Puss faces his own mortality, but don’t worry, he still delivers the kind of bravado and charm that made him a star. And those wide-eyed, heart-melting looks? That’s Oscar-worthy in itself.

Jonesy – Alien

In a movie where most characters are just trying not to become extraterrestrial lunch, Jonesy (or “Jonesy the Cat”) has the kind of plot armor only a true feline could pull off. Nestled in his little cryo-chamber while chaos reigns, Jonesy proves that in space, no one can hear you meow, but you can still steal the scene.

On a day like International Cat Day 2025, Jonesy reminds us that cats have a survival instinct that can rival even Sigourney Weaver.

Cat – Flow

Last year’s Best Animated Feature winner introduced audiences to a simple yet deeply moving story: a cat searching for a new home. Flow doesn’t rely on flashy tricks, instead, it captures the quiet resilience and curiosity that define so many real-life cats.

For a holiday celebrating all things feline, this film is a love letter to the way cats navigate life on their own terms… even when the world is changing around them.

Goose – Captain Marvel and The Marvels

Okay, technically Goose is a Flerken, an alien species that just happens to look like a cat, but tell that to anyone who’s watched her nonchalantly swallow entire enemies whole. Goose manages to be both adorable and terrifying, a combination any real cat owner will tell you is not at all unrealistic.

By International Cat Day 2025, Goose has firmly cemented herself as one of Marvel’s most memorable “pets,” proving that not all heroes wear capes, some just cough up interdimensional portals.

Why Cats Rule the Big Screen

So why do cats make such compelling film characters? Maybe it’s their unpredictability, they can be playful one second and coldly calculating the next. Maybe it’s the way they can wordlessly command a room, a camera, or an entire plotline. Or maybe it’s just that humans, deep down, love a little mystery in our movie stars.

Cats on screen often mirror their real-life counterparts: independent, intelligent, and impossible to fully pin down. Whether they’re animated kings, fairytale adventurers, sci-fi survivors, or alien imposters, these characters prove that cats bring something unique to storytelling.

Celebrating International Cat Day 2025, Onscreen and Off

If today inspires you to rewatch The Lion King for the hundredth time, finally stream Flow, or revisit the moment Goose causes chaos on Nick Fury’s desk, then this holiday has done its job.

But maybe the best way to celebrate International Cat Day 2025 is to spend a little extra time with the real cats in your life. Give them a treat, let them nap on your laptop, or simply watch them stare into the distance like they’re plotting something. Because they probably are.

After all, whether they’re fictional or purring in your lap, cats are, and always will be the true stars of the show.
