Why Cats Are Clawing, Rubbing, and Rolling on Cement Slabs, and Loving It

TikTok’s latest feline fad isn’t a fancy toy or deluxe tower. It’s a $2 concrete paver, and cats everywhere are obsessed.

Forget the cat condos, interactive robo-mice, and feather wands. The newest must-have item for your feline friend is something you’d usually find in the backyard or under your grill: a simple square of concrete.

It all started with a viral TikTok back in May from creator @abrameng. In the clip, he showed his cat Kurt blissfully rolling around on concrete when taken outside. The solution? Bring the concrete inside. “So I’m bringing the concrete to him,” Engle said in the now-viral video, which has racked up over 4.7 million views.

Since then, pet parents across the internet have rushed to their local hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowe’s, you name it, to scoop up these $2 paver slabs and plop them in their living rooms. The results? Cats rubbing, scratching, sprawling, and claiming these humble hunks of cement like they’re made of gold.

A Trend That’s More Than Just Cute

While some people guessed that cats who used to live outside are drawn to the slabs because they remind them of the “street life,” others are just having fun with it, heating the pavers in the sun for an extra cozy lounge spot or building creative concrete beds for their pets.

But it’s not just nostalgia or randomness. Dr. Annie Valuska, a pet behaviorist with Purina, says there’s real science behind the concrete craze.

“For cats who once lived outdoors, it probably does feel familiar,” she told USA TODAY. “But what’s interesting is that even indoor-only cats, who have never lounged on concrete in their lives, are loving these slabs too.”

Cats + Novelty = Obsession

According to Dr. Valuska, cats are naturally drawn to new things in their environment. It’s a survival instinct. As “mesopredators”, animals that are both hunter and hunted, cats are wired to pay attention to changes around them. So when a big, cool, out-of-place object like a concrete slab appears in the middle of the living room? Game on.

“It’s novel. It’s strange. It doesn’t belong there. And that alone can be irresistible to cats,” said Valuska.

But there’s more. The texture of concrete is ideal for rubbing and scratching. Cats have scent glands on their cheeks, and when they rub against something, they’re not just getting a satisfying scratch, they’re marking it as theirs.

“It’s how they claim ownership,” Valuska said. “That’s why so many cats are seen rubbing and nuzzling the concrete over and over again.”

Not Every Cat’s a Fan, But That’s Okay

Like all viral pet trends, results vary. Some cats leap onto the slab like it’s a royal throne. Others sniff once and walk away unimpressed. Even in the USA TODAY newsroom, feline test subjects were split, some obsessed, others indifferent.

But for the price of a drive-thru coffee, trying the trend might be worth it. If your cat ends up loving it, you just scored the cheapest enrichment toy on the market.

So if you’ve got a curious kitty and a few bucks to spare, it might be time to roll into the hardware aisle. Just don’t be surprised if your cat starts ignoring all their expensive toys and curling up on cold concrete instead.
